Matt McGillivray Talks J-Bay, First Two Years On Tour, Sharks, Plus Preparing for Teahupo'o

South African Championship Tour surfer Matt McGillivray joins the pod to talk about J-Bay and his budding career on tour. He breaks down his long relationship with J-Bay, how his family moved to the small town of Jeffreys Bay ten years ago, the heavy hometown expectations on him, his first introduction to the CT as a wildcard there in 2018, and staying relaxed by enjoying surfing his favorite wave with just two guys out. He shares his thoughts on the tour schedule redesign, the intense pressure of the Mid-season Cut, and how he was just so happy to get to surf J-Bay after making the cut at Margaret River. He looks back at his wild first two years on tour, his tight relationship with Morgan Cibilic, filming Make or Break and Postcards From Morgs, and working with Channel Islands to lock in his equipment. Matt also tells stories about living in Australia during COVID, his family’s passion for skydiving and base jumping, sharks in the lineup, preparing for Teahupo’o, and his big goals for the rest of this season and next year.
